The term "tensile structure" typically refers to the construction of roofs using a membrane that is held in place by steel cables. These structures are known for their ability to function under tensile stress, their ease of pre-fabrication, their capacity to cover large spans, and their flexibility.
When it comes to external use, there are two primary options: PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) coated polyester cloth and PTFE (Poly Tetra Fluoro Ethylene) (Teflon) coated glass cloth. The PVC coating includes additives such as UV stabilizers, fire retardants, colorants, and antifungals.
The minimum number of supports means that tensile structures can cover expansive areas. Tensile fabric structures are lightweight compared to other types of construction, but also extremely strong. They are designed to withstand even the most severe weather conditions, providing protection from both the rain and sun.
Tensile membrane structures are primarily utilized as roofs due to their ability to cover large spans in an economical and aesthetically pleasing manner. However, they can also serve as entire buildings and are commonly used in applications such as sports facilities, storage and warehousing buildings, and exhibition venues.
